Prof. Mithran S. Goonewardene
Professor Mithran Goonewardene completed his Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Western Australia in 1981 and undertook his specialist training at the Forsyth Dental Centre in Boston, USA, obtaining a Certificate in Orthodontics from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine/Forsyth Dental Centre and a Master of Medical Science degree from the Harvard Medical School.
Professor Goonewardene has combined part-time orthodontic practice in Perth at the Subiaco and Booragoon clinics with a significant teaching role as Professor of Practice in Orthodontics at the University of Western Australia leading the Orthodontics Department for four decades. He has published numerous scientific papers in the peer reviewed literature and contributed to eight textbooks in orthodontics. He frequently delivers lectures and courses locally in Perth, nationally and internationally and plays an active role in education and delivery of orthodontic and surgical services in Sri Lanka, where he visits regularly. Professor Goonewardene's efforts in contributing to the development of orthodontics as a specialty in Sri Lanka are widely acknowledged as he continues to support visiting trainees for clinical placements in Perth.
Professor Goonewardene is an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Sri Lankan Orthodontic Society and the Australian Dental Association. He is a full member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Goonewardene is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International.
Professor Goonewardene was awarded the highest honour from the Australian Society of Orthodontists of Honorary Life Membership for his contribution to orthodontic education in Australia and Internationally.
Professor Goonewardene and his wife Tania are proud parents of Jasmine. He is also proud of his six adult. Roy, the oldest joined the practice as an orthodontist in 2015 after training in the US at the University of Connecticut. Christine is a respected physiotherapist who works in private practice and for the West Coast Eagles. Georgia, a nurse and Katherine, a school teacher, both reside live and work in Perth after many years in London. Andrew completed dentistry in the UK and has now started his orthodontic training in Aarhus, Denmark. Elizabeth , a chef, trained and worked in London and now resides and works in Perth.
